Nowadays, the rate of depression is at an all time high! The world seems to be offering us more and more ways to “freedom” or to “living your truth” or “living your best life” they’ll say. However with all these things that are supposed to bring people more happiness and liberty, there seems to be much more sadness, dissatisfaction, emptiness, bondage,… depression.
Maybe because the world has got it all twisted and is so desperately trying to find a mango on a pear tree. Maybe because a farmer is trying so hard to tell a computer engineer how his software – the one he manufactured! – is supposed to function. Or maybe this generation is just the know-it-all child who won’t let his father help him even when all his frantic endeavors lead to a dead end. An African proverb says “what an elder can see while seated, a child would never see even if he climbed on the tallest branch of the tallest tree”.
We need to come back to the basics!
We need to stop being so stubborn and set on the ways that aren’t helping us anyway!
Maybe we just need to press the reset button and go back to the factory settings. The one who created you – Him and Him alone – knows how best you can thrive and function well – because he made you, He very intentionally wired you to function in a particular way. Maybe you just need to stop, listen and follow His instructions.
As much as this world throws troubles at us, sometimes, we thrust ourselves on to troubles. We Walk into them and bask in them. We wallow in self pity and very slowly slip into a depressive state that we create for ourselves.
Girl! Snap out of it!
Why is there so much depression and sadness? Why is there so much dissatisfaction and discontentment?
There are actually some reasons that you could maybe understand why they’ll make someone depressed – not that depression is commendable, or recommendable in such cases – but that it could be understandable after certain horrible tragedies.
However, there are other reasons that clearly shouldn’t be a reason why anyone should plunge themselves into that deep dark hole – depression. Unfortunately however those reasons are some of the prevailing ones these days.
* The Desire to “belong”
With the advent of social media, there’s so much more pressure thrust upon many people especially younger ones to meet up to the “social media status”. People want to have the best pose, the most likes possible, the highest number of followers, get that best view, travel to the most esquisite places and have the best photos… Just so much pressure we allow upon ourselves. When we don’t seem to meet up with the social media status – when we do not belong, we think life is horrible and we get depressed.

* The Desire for Fame and Attention
This ties with the previous point above. The desire for the “celebrity status” is leading many down the dark path of depression. A survey was carried out on US teens by Independent and here’s a summary of the results they got: More than half of teenagers do not want a career – they just want to be famous. You can read the full article here
Unfortunately, this isn’t the case in the US only. Almost every modern society around the world faces this issue. People will go to great heights just to become famous and basically live inauthentic lives. Because they can’t be their true selves, ofcourse genuine happiness wouldn’t be in their reach.

* Impatience
In a fast world where almost everything is “fast” – fast food, fast cars, fast diets, instant meals, fast computers, one-night-stands, etc … the virtue of patience is not known by many anymore. The here-and-now culture has taken over. Most people don’t want to wait, can’t wait and won’t wait! Now or never! We want everything our hearts desire instantly! Waiting on God is tortuous and unimaginable. When our very very thin span of patience wears out, there goes our happiness along with it.
Girl! Snap out of it!
Desiring the good things in life isn’t bad – not at all! Actually you should desire good things! But letting your desires overshadow your senses and your purpose here on earth is definitely not right and you should be watchful to not find yourself in the trap of the enemy.
Girl, protect your happiness and joy with a strong determination! The devil is after these because when you arer sad and depressed, you become demotivated, life becomes meaningless and you’ll be right where the enemy wants you to be. Right where he can easily control you. Do not let that happen!
We’ll be glad to hear from you! Have you ever found yourself in a place of deep sadness? What caused it and how did you overcome it?
