In 2 Samuel 20:14–22, we meet a remarkable figure known only as “a wise woman” from the city of Abel. When her city faced destruction under the military commander Joab, she stepped forward in a time of crisis, negotiated with the commander, saved thousands of lives and her city from destruction. Though her name is lost to history, her legacy speaks volumes, and her example remains deeply relevant for every woman on earth today.
A Woman of Wisdom
The first thing the bible highlights about her is, Wisdom. She did not act out of fear or confusion but used discernment and thoughtful words to guide her people. Similarly, Proverbs 31 celebrates the virtuous woman who “opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue” (Prov. 31:26). Every woman is called to this same spirit of godly wisdom, seeking direction from the Lord to guide her family, workplace, and community.
A Woman of Courage
Confronting Joab was risky, we are not told if she had a reputable position in the government or in her community. Probably she did but imagine having to meet up with the president of your country who is very ruthless in his ways. You have a mission to change his mind on serious state maters which he had already decided on. How will that feel to you? Will you be courageous enough to even approach him? This appears to have been the woman of Adels position at that time, yet she boldly stood for what was right.
In our days, such courage might seem impulsive, some people may look at it as being prideful or too authoritative. Most women shy away from standing for the truth and speaking up, for fear of judgment or reproach. However, the bible through this story is asking women to show courage, whether in raising children in faith, standing firm in their values, or speaking peace in troubled times.
2 Timothy 1:7 states “for the spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline”.
A Woman of Influence
This wise woman persuaded her people to act wisely and saved her city.
Dear woman how do you use the influence you have? What are you doing with that high position at your job site, amongst your friends, in your home, in your church? Do you influence people towards good or towards evil? Peace or strive? You may not hold public titles, but every woman born from Eve holds an indisputable influence in her bosom. She is an incubator, an influencer, a friend, a mother, wife, daughter and sister. Every woman has a voice that should be used to influence nations for God’s kingdom, using prayers, guidance, nurture, love, peace, truth and boldness.
A Woman of Peace and Faithfulness
Her words to Joab were: “I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel” (2 Samuel 20:19). She lived as a peacemaker and remained loyal to her people. Jesus blesses such women, calling them children of God (Matthew 5:9).
Every time you create peace in your home, relationships and community, you continue this woman’s mission of peacemaking and of course blessings will follow because, blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.
Oh! How lovely it is to be called a child of God!
A Lasting Legacy
Though nameless, the wise woman of Abel saved an entire city. Her story, like that of the Proverbs 31 woman, reminds us that true legacy is not in recognition but in godly impact. Proverbs 31:28 says, “Her children rise up and call her blessed.”
One question every person on earth should ask themselves often is this “How will I be remembered when I leave this world?”. What are the memories people will have of you when you are no more. What impact will still linger when you leave. Will it be joyful or sad?
This lady’s story was told to keep encouraging all women to never relent in their faith, love, wisdom, kindness and boldness in Christ. These are the things that will outlast our lifetime and create an impact that will be cherished through out generations.
Work to keep a worthy legacy that will live beyond your lifetime, engraved not only on paper or stones but in hearts of men.
Today’s Christian woman leaves a legacy of faith, love, and wisdom that will outlast her lifetime.
Final Reflection
The woman of Abel just like the Proverbs 31 woman present a timeless portrait of godly womanhood: wise, courageous, peaceable, and faithful. Her story reminds us that Christian women today are powerful agents of change, not because of status or recognition, but because of the Spirit of God at work in them.
Remember, True beauty and strength are not in titles or recognition, but in living faithfully before God. Just like the woman of Abel, your wisdom and faith can save homes, strengthen communities, and leave a legacy that honors God.
