BREAKTHROUGH

The wilderness season is usually a season that is not easy to navigate, neither is it an enjoyable season. Every Christian going through the wilderness always has one goal in mind (which keeps them hopeful), that is the “Breakthrough”. Like Joshua and the Israelites, they are patiently waiting for God to say, “now is the time, blow the battle sound and the walls of Jericho shall fall down, and you shall go in and possess your possession” (Joshua 6:3-5). A breakthrough is a season of victory, characterized by major progress and overcoming of obstacles that have existed for a period in a person’s life. Breakthroughs are pleasurable moments in the life of every human being, for believers, breakthroughs are testimonies used to encourage those who are still navigating the wilderness.
When you see someone who has arrived at the breakthrough, you are looking at the evidence of God’s everlasting love and faithfulness to mankind. If you take a sneak peak into the process the person went through before arriving at that point, I believe you would be moved by impulse to shout many “Hallelujahs” unto God. What qualifies a person for breakthrough? What makes you know you are approaching, or you are in your breakthrough season? Can breakthrough be delayed? These are some questions we will be answering in our write ups this month. However, I would like to share some aspects that are usually common with those who experience a breakthrough.

1. Faith and Grit

Those who experience breakthrough(s) are people of undying faith in God. Such people have made up their minds to trust God against all odds. They have a unique strength of mind and great courage to stand firm fearlessly through all circumstances and challenges that show forth during the wilderness season. Joshua and Caleb had this kind of faith and grit during the wilderness season that’s why they could achieve the breakthroughs they achieved after the wilderness season was over (Deuteronomy 1:26-46, Joshua 14:7-14). Abraham and Sarah, Esther, Ruth, David, Paul etc. portrayed such faith and grit and therefore enjoyed massive victories in their live times.

2. Obedience and Submissiveness

At times our breakthroughs are usually delayed because of our disobedience towards God through sin, doubt, unbelief, pride etc. This was the case of the generation of the Israelites that were delivered from Egypt; because they were stubborn and disobeyed God, they did not enjoy the beauty of the breakthrough God had planned for them (Deuteronomy 1:26-46). Our Lord Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to us when He left the earth to be our Helper, Daily Companion, and Best Friend (Acts 1:4-5, Luke 24:49). When we listen to the Holy Spirit and swiftly obey what He tells us to do, we please God and provoke His blessings upon us. Our obedience paves the way for God to act quickly on our behalf because obedience to God is resistance to the devil who is always distraught and flees from us when we are focused on God (James 4:7). Our complete obedience and submission to God shuts the door for the works of satan in our lives, because through our obedience to God, we are testifying that Jesus Christ is Lord and He died to set us free from all our sins; this single testimony destroys every legal right the devil holds against believers in Christ. Ruth was obedient and submissive to God and to her mother-in-law, her act of obedience and submission birth a new life them. Breakthrough always accompanies complete obedience and submission to God.

3. Patience

Massive victories and great testimonies are some of the common denominators of those who wait patiently on the Lord. Patience, however, is a virtue that is not easy to possess and not everyone has it. That is why patience usually comes before a breakthrough because it is a necessary ingredient that would enable the depth and magnitude of a breakthrough to be appreciated by people, cause unbelievers to believe in God, and above every other thing exalt the Name of Jesus and bring glory to God.

The three aspects I have mentioned above are only part of several aspects that you can identify with someone who has experienced a breakthrough. If you are waiting for a breakthrough, I encourage you to be of good cheer, always be thankful, be loving, rejoice always, and praise God always. The good news is that God wants you to prosper and enjoy life (Genesis 1:28), He is ready and always there to usher you into a season of breakthrough. Submit to His process, stop trying to understand everything first before you obey, just trust Him, and obey Him for He loves you and wants the best for you.
