How to Discover Your Purpose

Here comes another article on purpose! 🙂  We write so much on purpose on this blog because its importance and essentiality cannot be overemphasized or over talked about! We NEED purpose in order to live a fulfilled, happier and more meaningful life. You know like the phrase people always complete; “Life’s too short to….”. I’d say;

Life’s too short to live it purposelessly

My life started making much more sense to me when I found my purpose! Everything seemed to fall perfectly in place and became more meaningful to me. Each day I do something in line with purpose it’s the most fulfilling and beautiful feeling ever! I wouldn’t trade that for anything, much less for a life with no purpose.

In the last article I wrote, I emphasized the importance of finding purpose in order to know what to prioritize in your life and I said in order to set your priorities straight, you need to know what to prioritize in the first place. When you discover purpose, you’ll be able to rightly prioritize because everything that you should put at the top of the list will be in line with purpose. Also, purpose has a way of driving you and making you want to do more and be better because you get so much fulfillment from doing it. So keeping to your priorities will also become much easier. If you haven’t read that article on setting your priorities straight yet, you can find it here.

You might be wondering to yourself what your purpose could be – what is it that you’ve been put here on earth to do – and you just can’t figure it out. In this article, I’d like to write about some ways through which you can discover what your purpose is.

1. Be Determined to find it

The first thing you need to have in order to find purpose is the will to find it. You know like the old saying goes ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way‘ – When you’re really focused on getting something and determined to get it, you’ll be a step closer to it. Determination comes with tenacity and patience. Just because you decide to find what your purpose is today, doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll find it by tomorrow or next week or even next year! It could take a while before you really find it and even when you do find it, it might take a while to come to a full understanding of what it really means. This could be frustrating! That’s why you have to be determined to not give up until you find it.

2. Ask God What It Is

You know when it comes to asking God, somehow in our minds we’ve narrowed down what we can ask to only particular things and when it comes to other things, we don’t even think we could ask Him because our minds already have a stereotypical idea of what it is we can ask of Him. But hey you can ask Him for anything! – ANYTHING! – including asking Him to tell you what your purpose is. Thankfully God wants everyone to live a purposeful life – he wants you to know what it is! So just ask Him and listen. He’ll surely tell you.

3. Take Risks and Try New Things

Another way to find out what your purpose is is by trying out many different things. It doesn’t have to be something too big or difficult. Just look around you; in your community, your church, school, work, family etc. What can you volunteer to do? or what tasks can you take upon yourself? As many times as you can find the opportunity,  I encourage you to grab it and go for it! It might be something that’ll push you out of your comfort zone sometimes – that’s okay! Go ahead and try it! Along the way of trying out new, difficult, uncomfortable and risky things, your purpose is at a stop just right around the corner! Just keep going.

4. Search For It

I’ve already mentioned this before. Reading and researching a lot about purpose will help you find it quicker. There are tons of books and videos on purpose. Go online and do something more productive with your internet time and find these materials. Read them, follow the advice and tips you’ll find in them and eventually you will discover what your purpose is.

I really urge you to make it your mission to discover your purpose! You will be so grateful you did when you finally find it!

When you find purpose, you might be so surprised that you didn’t even know yourself as you become acquainted with the new you. Your desires, aspirations, and ambitions might begin to change so drastically that you might begin to wonder which is the real you – the one before purpose or the one after because it could be such a sharp and radical change that the two would be nothing like each other. However, the feeling of fulfillment, satisfaction and serenity you will get will be an indication of which is the real you.

Also, I think you grow in purpose. Once you find it, you don’t really understand completely what it is or how you should go about trying to fulfill it. But as you start working on it, it becomes clearer and more understandable to you. It’s a lifelong process.
