This month we are focusing on the theme of “A pure heart”. Now, how can we purify our hearts?
In the purification process, there is always a substance of purification, meaning the object of purification does not purify itself.
The substance of purification is simply what can be used to purify. Purification is done for the purpose of making clean. Usually, to make something pure, another thing is used or added to it. The other thing used or added to it is what I call SUBSTANCE OF PURIFICATION.
Water purification process is an example which helped me understand the importance of the SUBSTANCE OF PURIFICATION in the purification process. To purify water, physical, biological, chemical and electromagnetic processes are used. Whatever process is used, there is always a SUBSTANCE used in the process. For example, in the physical water purification process, a FILTERis used for filtration; biologically, SLOW SAND FILTERSare used; chemically, CHLORINEis used and electromagnetically ULTRAVIOLET LIGHTis used. The highlighted words above are the substances of water purification.
Now, we are talking about HEART PURIFICATION. So what is the process of heart purification and what needs to be used or added to our hearts to make it pure?
Matthew 5:8 (NLT) says “God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.”
AND
John 3:3-5 “Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?” Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.”
From Matthew 5:8 we see that only the pure in heart will see God and John 3:3-5 helps us to understand that the process of heart purification is being born of the water and the spirit. So being BORN AGAIN stands for the purification process, which is synonymous to the biological process in our water purification process highlighted above. Now that we know the process, what then is the SUBSTANCE? Now baptism of water is physical but how does baptism of the spirit come?
The spirit talked about above is the Holy Spirit of God. How can we have the Holy Spirit?
It is by believing and inviting JESUS CHRIST into our hearts. So, our substance of heart purification is JESUS CHRIST. This means for the process of heart purification of the water and the Spirit to take place, the substance, JESUS CHRIST has to be present. How then can we invite Jesus Christ to purify our hearts? By admitting our sins and acknowledging that we are not perfect. Ask God to forgive our sins and repent of that sin. Believe and Confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior and ask JESUS the heart purifier to transforms our hearts and give us a new spirit. Hebrews 1:3b (NLT) says …When He (Jesus) cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.
God calls David a man after God’s heart. David also fell into temptation and sinned but one thing is sure, David loved God so much that he could not do without God. When he sinned he acknowledged it and repented (turned away) from it and asked God to purify his heart and give him a new spirit (psalm 51:10).
It is true we are human and the bible says all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. But thank God for His Grace evident in Jesus Christ, who died as atonement for our sins, we are made right with God. (Romans 3:23-24).We need to Believe and Confess Jesus as Lord over our lives and watch Him purify our hearts through the power of His Spirit in us because on our own we cannot make it. David understood only God could purify and He sought God to purify his heart. You too can do same.
