We live in a world where people are becoming increasingly selfish, self centered and shallow. The sad thing though is that we don’t even realize this! People are creating idols of themselves without even realizing it because it has become a norm.
This is no wonder though when talks meant to be “motivational” implore and encourage people to always put themselves first, to “flaunt their stuff”, to live “their” truth, to live their lives” and much more misleading phrases like these. While it is absolutely necessary and important for everyone to be confident in themselves, we must be careful not to cross the line between confidence and self worship. The devil always takes what is meant for good and turns it upside down without totally changing its original form so that people who aren’t very vigilant and discerning wouldn’t notice the difference.
We have been called to do and to be much more in life! There is much more to life than the things this world will have us cling to; fame, beauty, approval, riches, friendships/relationships, adventure etc. All these are not bad of themselves and there’s nothing wrong in desiring them because God created all things and every good thing is meant for us to enjoy.
However like I said above, the devil always seeks to pervert and twist every good thing that God has created. So that instead of them being a blessing that they were meant to be, they become a tool for destruction and manipulation in the hands of the devil.
We must stay alert sister! The devil is very diligent at his work. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8ESV). He doesn’t rest!
So we’ve got to be consciously seeking something more, something higher and better – the things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. We’ve got to always remind ourselves of the purpose why God put us here on earth and remember that life isn’t always about us.
In every desire you have, every ambition, every vision and plan, you’ve got to make sure that your underlying desire and purpose is for God’s glory, for His pleasure. Seek to serve him and honor him in all you do. Serving God is serving people.
If it’s your biggest desire to own a company, you’ve got to ask yourself if at the end of the day the operations of that company give God glory, if you want to be actor, you’ve got to ask yourself if the movies you’ll be a part of will be honoring to God.
What do you think about first thing in the morning? What’s on your mind as you go through your daily activities? What are your dreams and ambitions? What are you working so hard for and why? A careful and honest examination of our hearts will reveal to us wheter we’re seeking after the things above or not.
Whatever our desires are, we’ve got to make sure they are honoring to God and that we are seeking the things above through them.
