Anyone who wants to know God and walk closely with Him, must obey Him. There is no way we can come into a close relationship with God and walk fully in the blessings of Christ without obeying Him.
What then is obedience ?
Biblical obedience has to do with hearing or harkening to a higher authority~God.
It is hearing God’s word and acting accordingly. It could also mean, to hear, trust, submit, and surrender to God and His word. Why then is it important to obey?
* Jesus Himself calls us to obedience.
Christ is our perfect model and as His disciples, He expects of us to follow His commands. Our motivation for such obedience is our love for Him. We can’t say we love Him, yet we do not obey. If we love then we are expected to obey
* Obedience is an act of worship.
Jesus gave up His life for our redemption. He came and died while we were yet sinners that we be saved. Salvation is a free gift from God to mankind. In gratitude therefore, for this grace we received, we should obey the one who saved us.
* God rewards obedience.
When we hear about Christ, it doesn’t suffice at that, we have to do what His word says. If we can’t obey His word, then we’re like someone who looks at herself in the mirror and forgets how she looks immediately she walks from the mirror. To live the blessings that come with Christ, we need to obey His word and live according to His word.
* Obedience demonstrates our faith in God.
We can only obey what we trust and have faith in it. If we obey, it’s a sign of our trust and our faith. We can’t claim to know God yet we do not trust and obey His word. If we know God, we demonstrate it by trusting and doing as His word says.
* Obedience is better than sacrifice.
Our sacrifice is not very valuable before God when we do not obey. We can’t buy God with money or with our gifts. If we reject God’s word, then we reject Him and our sacrifices are filth before Him. God accepts the sacrifices from those with obedient hearts, hence if we want our sacrifices, be it of time, money, service to be acceptable in God’s sight, we need to obey Him and He is His word.
* Disobedience leads to sin and sin to death.
Because Adam disobeyed, he brought sin and death into the world but Christ’ perfect obedience restores fellowship for all who obey. If you live in disobedience of God’s word, then the Adamic nature is still at work in you and your ultimate end is death. Choose ye therefore to obey, by accepting Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour, studying and meditating on His word and allow the Holy Spirit to transform us from within.
* Obedience to God and His word helps us enjoy a close relationship with Him
The more we grow in obedience of God’s Word without compromises, the more joyful and fulfilling life will be and we live the blessings that accrue to God’s children.
