Happy New Year. We thank God for enabling us to see a new year. The beginning of the year is always characterized by planning for the year which entails making choices on what to do and what not do. These choices we make are usually the essence of what is commonly called new year resolutions or goals. Once our choices are made, we make a decision to attain our set goals. The word “Decision” is defined as the act or process of deciding. To “decide” simply means to make a final choice or select a course of action. So, our theme for this month is the “THE DECISION”.
In making decisions, our hope is to choose what is right and will be beneficial for us. I have come to realize that there is one ultimate choice in life’s journey which is the choice between RIGHT and WRONG. Sometimes in trying to make the right choices we discover in the long run that the choice we made was actually not the right choice. That is why we usually seek the advice of people who have walked the path we wish to choose in order to help us determine whether the decisions we are about to make are the right decisions. Imagine getting into a phone shop to buy a phone and the phone manufacturer shows you two phones. He tells you that one phone is bad and the other is in good conditions. Which of the phones will you get? Obviously, because the manufacturer created the phone, you will trust his judgement and go for the phone which is good.
God Almighty (our manufacturer) who is ALL knowing has already made known to us the decisions that will lead to life and those that will lead to destruction. Now, the choice is ours to make. We either chose life or death, prosperity or destruction. In the choices you make in life, have you ever thought of the counsel which God our maker, who knows the end from the beginning has to say about it Please take some time to ponder on what God tells us about our ultimate life choice in Deuteronomy 30:15-20:
“Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. For I command you this day to love the Lord your God and to keep his commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in his ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy. But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are drawn away to serve and worship other gods, then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live a long, good life in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy. Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This[c] is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the Lord, you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
Life’s journey is about choices and the choice you make is key to your life. Your choice either leads to life or destruction.
