The person of the Holy Spirit is one topic that distinguishes Christianity from most other religions. It is also a highly debated and controversial topic. Some people can’t agree that the Holy Spirit exists because it just doesn’t make sense to them that a “spirit ” that no one can see is able to do the things we Christians claim He does. Even worse that He is a “being” not just a spirit. It perplexes the mind and so it’s just easier to dismiss Him and consider Him an illusion.
Well the truth is, the Holy Spirit is a mystery. Even as Christians we can’t totally grasp the concept with our minds. In fact our minds don’t have the capacity to understand it at all even if we tried. It actually can’t make logical sense to the brain.
However we believe in Him and know He is real because eventhough we haven’t seen Him, we have EXPERIENCED Him. We have felt Him and heard Him. We have known Him and loved Him. Just as certain as we are that when we breathe in, we breathe in Oxygen that sustains our physical bodies eventhough we can’t see it, that’s the same way we know the Holy Spirit is real eventhough we can’t see Him.
We see the effects He has on us, on other people. We see the transformations that occur when he comes upon us. Just like when the wind blows and bends a tree… eventhough we can’t see the wind, we can see the tree bend. That’s how it is with the Holy Spirit, though unseen, His effects on people are very much visible and indisputable.
Through out the book of Acts in the Bible, we see countless examples of these transformations I’m talking about. We see cowards become bold speakers (Acts 2:14), we see unbelievers be cut through the hearts by words spoken through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:37) .
Imagine that one friend who’s the most adamant, unapologetic unbeliever. That friend who thinks Christians are a joke and God doesn’t exist. Imagine one day they listen to someone speak and all of a sudden, they now believe. How do you explain that? What human power can achieve that? That is the Holy Spirit at work. He is unseen yet His transformational power is very much visible! This example was the exact scenario with Saul who later became Paul. A man who was determined to destroy anyone or anything that confessed Christ turned out to be one of the biggest preachers of Christ to this day! Now that is the Holy Spirit. How can the words of a mere man cause a lame man to walk again, heal a sick man or cast out a demon? Those are no ordinary words. Those words are filled with the Spirit that’s why they can achieve what they do.
So if ever you’re tempted to have doubts about His existence, look at the transformations first in your life, then in lives around you and see Him through his mighty works.
The Holy Spirit though unseen, is very much visible through His works.
Lord, Father all-powerful and ever-living God, I thank You, for even though I am a sinner, your unprofitable servant, not because of my worth but in the kindness of your mercy, You have fed me with the Precious Body Blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that this Holy Communion may not bring me condemnation and punishment but forgiveness and salvation. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in the power to do good. May it be my strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impulses, bodily and spiritual. May it unite me more closely to you, the One true God, and lead me safely through death to everlasting happiness with You. And I pray that You will lead me, a sinner, to the banquet where you, with Your Son and holy Spirit, are true and perfect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy, gladness without end, and perfect happiness to your saints. grant this through Christ our Lord, Amen.- S After Jesus is placed in the tomb, Mary is the only one who keeps alive the flame of faith, preparing to welcome the joyful and surprising proclamation of the Resurrection.
