Dear reader, this is going to be a love story.
I know what you are thinking…but a good love story is necessary once in a while.
So, you might have met someone during your lifetime who is described ashaving a passion for Christ . They seem to burning with a love for God, so great that it almost becomes their Christian identity. In the past articles we have explored different aspects of Christian love and if you have not read them, I urge you to take a click back and enjoy. Today we are delving into being in love with God.
THE BEGINING
Entering my Christian awakening at a relatively mature age, I realized I previously believed that I loved God and was so in love with him… but this suddenly rang untrue. I found myself asking the question;
What does it take to be in love with God?
To have that passion burning inside you?
The response as I have learnt is simple.
It requires that we KNOW our God. He doesn’t want our sacrifices and gifts or to know you went to church such and such number of times, but he needs you to know him. This is something we get to learn about every single day. In my life he has used, success, failures, pain, joy, humility, terrible choices and terrible mistakes to show me who he is and how much he loves me.
THE NOW
In this love journey I have realized two important facets of the love we can share with God.
The first is Communication.
Think of a time, Dear Reader when you were in love. Oh man, the crush right? And you want to talk with them every day and see them every time… Maybe your story ends well or maybe they broke your heart but learning to love God starts like that. Talking to him every single moment you get.
God loves details, I mean he made and knows every bit of you, in addition he is present everywhere you go at every time and best of all he loves you. All we need do is bring him in on our lives.
Talk to God when you wake up, when making breakfast, when at work, when doing laundry… whatever you do, just talk with him.
A great author once wrote that God placed this question in his heart.
“Why don’t you come before me like you know I love you?”This rang a bell for me.
Talk to God like you know he is nuts about you. Be yourself before the one who knows the real you. If you envied someone, ignored a need, cheated on your spouse and feel no remorse, still talk to him and beg for the grace to overcome. Just be honest. God values frankness just like he said in Job 42:7 “…I am angry with your two friends for you have not spoken accurately about me as my servant Job has.”
All the great men in the bible were known as friends of GOD; Moses, David, Job they all show an element of frankness. They spoke with God, Questioned him even, were angry at him and did not hide it they knew they could do this because God was their friend. You will be thinking hmmmm those were different times but no, its still the same God and we are his same creations.
Next and equally important is Obedience.
Throughout the word of God he stresses on this particular aspect. Think of this as spicing up your relationship with Him. God delights in our Obedience and through obedience we essentially surrender to the freedom and blessings that his love offers and we abide in his love.
There is definitely no way that we can say we love God without obeying His command. This is clearly written in John 14:15 where Jesus said, “If you love me, obey my commands.”
How do we obey out of Love?
- Going after what God loves, which are the souls of Men. 2 Peter 3:9 says, “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance…”
- By undertaking one of the greatest assignments He gave by bringing others to Christ. He admonished us in Matthew 28:19 ”Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and the son and the Holy Spirit.”
- By reconciling the world back to him. It is evident that if we love someone, we will not like to see him hurt. So we show our love by preaching the ministry of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:19 NLT“For God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. So we are Christ’s ambassadors as if God s making an appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, Come Back to God.”
Dear reader, after reading all these on Love, I urge all of us not only to enjoy God’s love but take steps to do things out of our love for him. Even today is a good day to start.
Remain Blessed.
